Soaring-Sycamore-web.jpg

24" x 36" Acrylic on Canvas

A late October walk in a nearby forest revealed a dynamic Sycamore basking its upper branches in the late afternoon sun. Gentle breezes tumbled some of the leaves and brought a hint of cooler days to come.

Keeping Watch.jpeg

24" x 30" Acrylic on Canvas

I was intrigued by the textures and branches of this tree. And though its living days have been long gone, I felt it still offered a home and perhaps a perch for nearby raptors. The Great Horned Owl, which I have seen many times in my area, mostly silhouetted at night, seemed to be a good character for this stage.

Bobcat-rock-wall.jpg

30" x 40" Acrylic on Canvas

Inspiration for this painting came from a hike at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. The dancing shadows and sunshine on this massive cliff face animated  the area. The tree trunks did a nice job of breaking up the flat stone face and give support to the mostly hidden canopy above.Textures were everywhere. This was my first bobcat painting. What I learned from studying this animal's beauty has inspired me to do other wildcats.

Awaiting-sunset.jpg

30" x 40" Acrylic on Canvas

I discovered this wonderful tree during a woodland walk. I was immediately attracted to its many textures and gnarly personality. I set my painting late day, still some hours before sunset, a bit gloomy and atmospheric. I chose a  pair of tawny owls as wildlife since I thought their coloring and textures were a good fit for the tree.Tawny owls are native to Eurasia.

Frisky-Finch.jpg

18" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

Inspiration for this painting came from watching a male and female yellow finch bouncing about in a backyard bush. It was Spring. The male was particularly animated and noisy. Perhaps he was serenading the female. At times she seemed disinterested. The environment comes from a separate time and place shortly after a rain shower.

Thanks to Trish Harmon for her wonderful photography that inspired me while making this painting. One of my favorite forest dwelling birds, I saw my first Great Horned Owl when I was around 15 while hiking through an Autumn forest in Kentucky. Like a ghost, it came out of nowhere, glided silently among the trees and disappeared in the gloom.
